Science and Civilization in Islam
After a brief historical orientation, students will study the nature of science in regions with Muslim rulers from the origins of Islam to the end of the Mughal empire (c.630-c.1740 CE), with special attention to astronomy and medicine. Questions to be considered will include: Was Islamic science original or derivative? How did Islamic astronomy and medicine differ from Greek astronomy and medicine? Where and when were hospitals invented? Where and when were astronomical observatories invented? Did Islamic astronomy influence Copernicus? Did Islamic medicine influence Western medicine? How did the Safavids and the Mughals influence each other in astronomy and medicine? Did Islamic science decline before the Western Industrial Revolution?
